Safer blood is a term which indicates 3 things

• Blood which does not transmit disease
• Blood which will not cause any adverse reactions
• Blood which will serve the purpose for which it is transfused

We employ these tests for complete screening:

• Hepatitis B (HBsAg)
• HIV I & II Antibody Testing
• HCV Antibody
• Malaria
• Syphilis

We minimise transfusion reactions bydoing careful serology workups which always include:

• Forward & Reverse grouping
• Coombs antibody screen
• Direct Coombs
• Enhanced Coombs cross-match
• Application of Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP).
• Making special blood components available for patients with special needs
• Optimising each blood component yield and standardising so that physicians can rely on the
  effects of transfusion.
• Total quality management to ensure sterility, viability, quantity, safety and quality.
